In TIG welding, the tungsten electrode is held in a stream of shielding gas, which ensures that it does not melt and retains its shape. The arc that is created between the electrode and the workpiece heats the workpiece and causes it to melt. The puddle of melt is then enclosed by the electrode and the shielding gas, creating a stable weld. TIG welding uses a direct power source, which is usually three-phase. The current is fed to the electrode via an electrode cable and to the workpiece via a ground cable.

The shielding gas used in TIG welding can be argon, helium or a mixture of both. It is fed to the welding machine through a gas cylinder and a gas line and then passed to the electrode through an electrode holder.
